Every time I play anything, I get no sound until opening System Prefs and selecting the output

So I installed the trial version of Boom 2 on my Macbook (Yosemite 10.10.2) and the setup went fine and I was able to get sound and everything sounded great. Now whenever I play anything, whether it's a video on YouTube, music in Spotify, etc, I get no sound until I open the System Preferences, go to Sound, then under Output select either Internal Speakers or Headphones (depending which I have at the time). I see Boom2Device listed, but I have to click either of the other output devices and then it auto selects Boom2Device and the sound kicks in. But if whatever sound source is being played stops and I exit Spotify or my browser or whatever, and start something back up, I get no sound and have to again go into Sound settings and click the output device. Please help as I really like the improvements to the sound I'm getting, but if I have to do this every single time a new source is played it's what's going to keep me from making a purchase.

  • I am having a similar problem. Each morning I have to go into system preferences and my Mac has decided to switch from my speakers(Headset) and Boom is highlighted. I switch back to my speakers to get sound. I have Bose speakers which connect thru the headset port.
  • I am having the same issue. Using a Meridian Explorer DAC and it happens when system is awakened from sleep or input sources change such as iTunes or safari.
  • Welp... I guess it's a no buy since there's no solution. :(
  • @BrentSoboleski,

Are you using Bluetooth headset? Could you please provide us more info on the same? Also, could you please disconnect the headset and check if you get the same issue? Do let us know your system info.

    @dannymccarter, @moeyzf,
Have you checked the option to launch Boom at login on start-up?
Also, could you please refer screenshot below and check the option shown in the screenshot below and let us know if it helps?
  • All settings match the screenshot. After say 20 minutes of idle and no audio playback there is no sound unless i click the output device.
  • Same problem here. Option checked to launch Boom at start-up. Option on screenshot checked. Not using a Blutooth headset. System is most recent Mac. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling. Can't use your product if I have to go through this hassle over and over each day, so I hope there is a solution. Thanks.
  • Same problem here.. I am using Jabra Revo Wireless and running on OSX 10.10.3 beta.. The problem started to occurred after update to 1.1.. I am even have to go to sound output settings if I am want to play a video on youtube.. And almost when I want to hear any sound I have to go to output settings.. I hope that this will help..
  • Hi,

We have released an update for Boom 2 a few hours back. We suggest you update your copy of Boom 2 to the latest version and check if it helps.
  • Using Boom 2 v.1.1.1, I'm still experiencing a similar problem every morning:

    On Yosemite 10.10.2

    1. Macbook Air is shut and asleep.
    2. Plugin iMac via Thunderbolt (for external display)
    3. Plugin headphones
    4. Open Macbook + switch over to iMac
    5. Audio still plays through iMac speakers instead of Headphones (this never happened before installing Boom).
    6. Replug headphones, audio output is fixed and going to headphones.

It's possible that Boom is having to juggle 2-3 audio devices with how many I have plugged in, but IMO, it should always default to headphones if they're plugged in, just as they do when Boom is not installed. I'm not sure if Boom has audio device priority logic baked in, but it would be great!

In the meantime, I may just wait to plugin my headphones when my computer is already on and switched to the iMac.
  • Hi Andymerskin,

Boom switches automatically by itself when any audio output device is connected or removed from the system.
What's happening here is that Boom 2 is detecting iMac speakers, as it is the last connected device. Hence the audio is audible via the same. To switch Boom 2 to other sound output device, you can do a 'Option + click' on default Mac volume icon in the menu bar and select the desired one or as you said, replug headphones.
  • Nonsense. I used Boom V1 with no problems. Now with Boom 2 I have nothing but problems. I want to go back to V1. V2 Sucks. I also have to choose in preferences sound and Boom does startup when my Mac reboots. Boom 2 sucks. You guys blew it. Where do I get my V1 back?

    Hi Oneangryjew,

There are several of users for whom Boom 2 is working flawlessly. We are trying to get to the root of every issue reported by our users and a lot of users have been really helpful in troubleshooting them.
If you could elaborate your query or get in touch with our Support Team (boom2@globaldelight.com), we can dig deep into your issues with Boom 2. If required, we can also have a Skype call.
You can find Boom 1 here: www.globaldelight.com/boom-1/
  • Hi Globaldelight,
it really appears to a fundamental flaw in Boom 2 not to have more explicit control over which audio output device the Boom 2 output is directed to. I have monitor with built-in speakers connected via DisplayPort. I want to use MacPro internal speakers. Unfortunately the monitor speaker are terrible and Boom 2 re-directs the audio to the monitor every time i resume for dimmed screen.

I am another potential customer which cannot accept the product with this severe defect.
Please please add an Boom 2 option to reliably choose the desired audio output device.

Until then i'm ditching this product.
  • Hi,

I am using Boom 2, Version 1.1.2. on an iMac (late 2013), OS X 10.10.3, downloaded and registered on you web site.

As long as Boom Volume or Equalizer or Effects are enabled I do not get any audio output, like the system is muted. As soon as I deactivate all of these Boom specific settings sound works perfect.

    Any approach to debug it?

    BR Philipp
  • The only time I have a problem with Boom working is after a system reboot. Each time after a new startup, the sound defaults to the computer speakers. I have to go into Preferences and select Boom2 and then it works. This only happens on a restart. Not a big deal for me. The difference in sound quality is worth the little glitch to me.
  • @Richard_Paris,

Boom 2 does provide an option to control over which audio output device the Boom 2 output is directed to. Please uncheck the option 'Keep Boom Helper running when I quit Boom' and check if it helps. Please refer screenshot below:

    @phriedel,

Could you please uncheck/check Boom 2 under Audio Midi Setup and check if it helps?

    @EPAtweeter,

As shown in the screenshot below, you can try enabling 'Keep Boom Helper running when I quit Boom' and check if it helps.
  • I also had this error, until I followed an official troubleshooting walkthrough in another thread. Now I have no sound at all. :(

Whenever I select the output "Internal Speakers" it defaults back to Boom2Device, and I get no sound at all. Previously I could select "Internal Speakers" and get output. Since I reinstalled boom2 (including the kext) I have nothing. I have to uninstall this. :/

I am running a Mac Mini with Boom2 (latest, just reinstalled) and OS X 10.10.4 beta - but this problem was present before I upgraded to the beta. I also have a Dell Ultrasharp U2711 connected via DisplayPort. Enabling/Disabling the Boom2Daemon makes no difference.

I've got a similar issue over here, but it only happens when I change the output. Say plug/unplug headphones.

When I do one of the previous, I get muted sound.

The easiest way I've found to avoid accessing the System Prefs, is left-clicking with 'option' on the volume icon in the toolbar. It shows you the available output options and I just click the right one. Done.

The funny thing is that 'Boom2Device' is always selected. When I choose the output, say 'Headphones', it starts playing the sound, but the output goes back to 'Boom2Device'.

    Edit: I'm using Boom2 1.1.2 on a MacBook Pro with OS X 10.10.3
  • Hi Zanoii,

Could you please let us know whether Dell Ultrasharp U2711 has an audio output option?
Also, could you please quit Boom 2 and check which device has the sound output switched to? Boom switches automatically by itself when any audio output device is connected or removed from the system. You can always get in touch with our Support Team (boom2@globaldelight.com) for more help.
