Voila and competetion

I have used Snapz for over 5 years.
I recently purchased CaptureIt! to try it out.
I also own (and paid for) Paparazzi.

I just purchased Voila (thanks to MacZot) a few days ago.

SnapZ Pro X
http://www.ambrosiasw.com/utilities/snapzprox/
expensive at $69
captures movies
save as .bmp, .pict, .gif, .jpg, .png, .tiff, .pdf, or Photoshop files

CaptureIt!
http://deepit.ru/products/CaptureIt/info/
captures movies
$20
really different UI (I am still struggling with it)

Paparazzi
http://derailer.org/paparazzi/
bought it to capture complete webpages
development appears to have stopped 3 years ago
donationware

Voila
http://www.globaldelight.com/voila/
$40
allowed me to trash Paparazzi
does NOT capture movies
does save as .PSD
easy-to-use UI (not perfect, but pretty good)

Why did I write all of the above?
1. I would like to see a competitive comparison on your website.
2. I think you have a chance to grab a HUGE market share.

  • Hi devbarnes

Thanks for the encouraging words and some good suggestions as well. We will look into them and hopefully some of the features would make it into one of the future releases.

  • The one thing Viola needs to stand out is better publishing. I've got LittleSnapper and it's publishing is really good, but it's annotation tools are not nearly as good as Viola. I use SnagIt on the PC and Viola's stamps and annotation tools are similar. But publishing currently goes to the root directory of my server which clutters up things. I'd rather be able to put them in a specific folder and copy/paste the path from inside of Viola.
  • Hello harringg

Voila has the publishing options but it is not complete. We are working on this and planning to give users a wide variety of publish options.

Currently, you can publish to a specific folder of your choice. Simply type the absolute path or URL where you want to upload the image in the 'Server URL' and the images gets uploaded there.

  • Hello harringg

We hope you figured out the simple way of uploading the images to a specific folder via FTP URL.

  • Any timeframe for updates? I know, I know, devs never give timeframes, but are we talking this calendar year still? It's been ~two months since this post.

Both Skitch and LittleSnapper allow for posting to multiple FTP accounts for example.

    Thanks
  • Hello harringg

We appreciate your patience. Yes, we are working on it and it would come in the same calendar year :) The dev team is busy working on fixing some pressing issues at the moment and we would release an update with those defects being fixed.

  • FYI

Voila is the closest thing on the Mac to Snagit for PC from Techsmith software, except for this:

    ===
With Camtasia for Mac 1.0 out the door and a high level of interest in TechSmith products among the Mac community, we felt it was the right time to announce that we are in the early stages of actively developing Snagit for the Mac. I've got no more details to share at this point, but we'll use this list to communicate updates going forward.
    ===

Another good reason to improve the web upload features of Voila before Snagit hit's the scene. :-)
  • @ harringg

Thank you for your post. As mentioned earlier, we would be improving on the web uploading part.

Competition is always good, it makes the developers always look for efficient and quality output for each and every part of the product. At the end of the day, you, our dear customers, are the winners! Keep sending your feedback and suggestions to improve Voila.

    Regards
    Team Voila
  • Very disappointed with the lack of updates.
  • Hello davebarnes

We are working on the new update and the new update would address most of the usability issues, including copy-paste. We have a dedicated team working on Voila and they are hard at work. We would be updating the progress shortly via a blog post.

We appreciate your patience and kind support.

    Thanks
    Team Voila
  • With 2.5 in Beta, does it finally address the issue of improved web uploading?
  • Hello harringg

Voila version 2.5 is mainly aimed at Snow Leopard compatibility and fixing some issues that came in v2.1+10.5.8. That said, we have new features as well.

We are working on the web uploading/ sharing separately.

    Thanks
    Team Voila
  • Hope it's a priority. Keep in mind SnagIt from TechSmith is coming for the Mac. Right now, Voila is the "best" of the available Mac screen capture apps, but it's poor upload abilities make it "not ready" for every day use. LittleSnapper just released a fix that had been giving me and others issues, and that's been resolved.

All I'm saying, as a user of your product, the longer you wait on this, the more likely there are going to be better products out there and potential new customers will go to those apps. It just sounds like it's low on your priority list is all, and with blogs/forums/ect... an easy, robust image upload feature is a must in this genre of application.
  • I'm posting here as a simple reminder for myself (and anyone else struggling with FTP setup)

    Account Name: (some descriptive name)
Server URL: ftp.mydomain.com/screencapture/voila/ (must create the /screencapture/voila/ on your server, or of course use any folder location of your choosing)
    Username: (yourusername)
    Password: (yourFTPpassword)

I was having trouble with the proper syntax in the Server URL until I figured it out and finally got some images uploaded to my server.

I hope it's being worked on, but the ability to copy/paste the uploaded image path is much needed. Along with multiple servers to upload to. ie. FTP1, FTP2, ect..
  • Hello harringg

Thanks for posting the FTP uploading steps. We have created screencast on uploading the images to Flickr and FTP.

Detailed steps are also mentioned in the Voila Help. You can always create multiple FTP accounts. We are working on improving the publish part.

    Thanks

  • Hello

Voila is celebrating its first anniversary on 6th Jan. We have re-structured the pricing of Voila and a single-user license copy can now be purchased at $29.95. For educational and various other types of discounts, please visit our online store.

A new version of Voila is in the pipeline with some great new features and enhancements. Visit our blog post for more details.

    Thanks

  • I purchased a Voila license too but also recognize another good screen capture/recording app: TechSmith's Jing (http://www.jingproject.com). I have some suggestions to improve Voila and will be posting them in the forums.
  • Hello derektom

Thank you for purchasing a Voila license and supporting us. You are most welcome with your suggestions and feedback to improve this tool further.

    Thanks
    Team Voila
  • I am not impressed by Voila and think it is overpriced at $20. This is why:

Two emails to support are still answered two days later. That is not good enough.

Soundflower is a problem. After initiating recording I have to go to System preferences and manually change sound setting to put sound back through computer speakers. That is not good enough.

I cannot specify video recording size except for using a selection box. I cannot specify to record to 1280x720 as example, nor can I specify the fps at the time of recording. This makes it difficult to edit Voila recordings into footage from another source in iMovie. This is not good enough.

Voila is quite good for stills capture and editing but it claims to also be a video recording software but it is too limited to be useful for video so I am purchasing iShowU instead. They at least seem capable of answering support emails in a timely manner.
