Have to frequently reset the Sound preference pane since installing Boom

edited July 2011 in Boom Discussions
Hi, Folks.... this may be be similar to another problem mentioned here, but besides not seeing Boom or Boom settings anywhere in the Finder (though there is just the slider icon in the activity monitor at the top of the screen), there's now this annoying problem of the sound frequently disappearing altogether.... that is until I open the Sound Preference Pane and reset it (usually from Boom as the Output device to Internal Speakers). Often seems to happen when switching from say, a video playing in Safari to one playing directly in Quicktime or VLC (or vice-versa).

Thanks, -Mat

  • Three years later, I'm having the same problem. This occurred mainly with the most recent upgrade. It also affects my Skype account, which audio stream gets recognized by Skype and my headphones. It got so bad, I had to uninstall Boom. Still wondering how to solve the problem.
  • Hi DrDecibel,

Could you please elaborate your query and contact our Support Team for more help.
  • Hello DrDecibel, and admin

I have the same problem, has anyone received the solution? Every time I reboot my Mac, I have to go into Sound Preferences and reset Boomas the Output device to intenral speakers. I hope we don't have to wait another 3 years!
  • Hi Scottkatz,

In Apple discussions and other forums, users have reported that the device (system) has some issue regarding the same. Please check the link below.
You can try quitting Boom and see if you get the same issue.

I'm having a similar problem, just reinstalled Boom 1.9.1 on a 2012 Macbook Pro with OS X 10.9.4. I use a TC Electronic audio interface. But Boom always reverts back to itself automatically when I select TC Near as the Output device. I have to repeatedly mash the mouse button selecting TC Near, then eventually after 10-15 seconds, it'll finally "stick" until I resume from sleep. Then it's back to Boom.

Download a screen movie here, demonstrates the issue:

  • Hi Canuckcam,

Boom switches automatically by itself when any audio output device is connected or removed from the system.
Ideally when Boom is active, BoomDevice would be selected. It also depends on which external Output is being used. If you have been using internal speakers then click on the internal speakers or if any other external device like speakers (TC Electronic), headphones (if Boom is active then the selection reverts to BoomDevice, this is normal), now play any audio file on your system and check if you can hear the boosted sound via TC Electronic. Please make sure to quit Boom within the app before switching the audio driver manually via Settings->Preferences->Sound.

Is there a way to prevent Boom from switching outputs automatically? I have an HDMI projector that I toggle on/off and it is very annoying when the sound automatically jumps to the projector. IMHO, automatic features are even more convenient when you can turn them off!

    Thanks
  • Hi AdotLand,

Boom switches automatically by itself when any audio output device is connected or removed from the system. Currently you need to quit Boom in order to select other sound output device manually. Consider your valuable suggestions noted.
  • Same issue here. Just wrote support. VERY annoying.. any chance of this being resolved ?
  • Same issue here as well. It is really annoying that I CANNOT switch between the Output audio devices. Boom is doing this automatically. Very annoying.
  • Hey,

We have provided an option to quit Boom within the app. Please quit Boom and check if it helps.
To Quit Boom, do a right click on Boom icon in menu bar or open Boom window and you will find a quit option to the top right corner. (Please refer screenshot below).
  • admin, I don't think that's what the issue is here; it seems that what people in this thread are asking for is a way to tell Boom which device(s) to use, or temporarily bypass Boom without having to quit it. I'm interested in this functionality, as well, especially since Boom sometimes fails to recognize the audio interface of my UltraWide display, causing me to have to manually select it (at which point Boom sees the change and re-takes control, functioning correctly)
  • Hi ParmaWebDev,

Thank you for elaborating the feature. Consider your valuable suggestions noted. We will pass it to our development team. Yet, we cannot promise you anything.
